Hazrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: The greatest sinner among the Muslims is the one who asked about something that was not forbidden, and because of his question, it was made forbidden.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered such a sermon that I had never heard a sermon like it before. He (peace be upon him) said, "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much." It is narrated that then the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) covered their faces, and despite their efforts to control themselves, the sound of their weeping could be heard. On this occasion, one companion asked, "Who is my father?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "So-and-so." Upon this, the verse was revealed: "Do not ask about such things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble."

Hadith Takhrij«صحیح، أخرجه البخاري في: 65 كتاب التفسير: 5 سورة المائدة: 12 باب لا تسألوا عن أشياء إن تبدلكم تسؤكم»
Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked questions to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when they asked too many questions, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became displeased. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and said: "Today, whatever you ask me, I will tell you." At that time, I looked to my right and left and saw that all the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) had wrapped their heads in their clothes and were weeping. There was a man who, if he quarreled with anyone, would be attributed (as a taunt) to someone other than his father. He asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Who is my father?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Huzaifah." After that, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as the true Messenger. We seek refuge with Allah from tribulations." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have never seen a day in matters of good and evil like today. Paradise and Hell were presented before me, and I saw them on this wall."

Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that some things were asked from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which he disliked. And when such questions were asked excessively, he became angry. Then he said to the people: (Well now) ask me whatever you wish. So a man asked: Who is my father? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Your father is Huzafah. Then another man stood up and asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who is my father? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Your father is Salim, the freed slave of Shaibah. Finally, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the state of the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! We repent to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, from asking such things which displease you.
