Hazrat Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that during the Battle of Khaybar, we suffered from repeated hunger. Finally, on the day Khaybar was conquered, we also received domestic donkeys (as spoils of war). So, we slaughtered them and began to cook them. When the pots began to boil, the announcer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proclaimed that the pots should be overturned and nothing from the meat of the domestic donkeys should be eaten. Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that some people said that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade it because the khums (one-fifth share) had not yet been taken from it, but some other companions said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had absolutely declared the meat of the donkey to be forbidden.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that I do not know whether the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating the meat of donkeys because they are used for carrying loads, and he did not like that the animals used for carrying loads should become extinct, or whether he forbade only the meat of domesticated donkeys on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar.

Hazrat Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that a fire was being lit. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, “For what purpose is this fire being lit?” The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied that it was for cooking the meat of donkeys. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Break the pots in which the donkey meat is being cooked and throw away the meat.” Upon this, the companions said, “Why don’t we just throw away the meat and wash the pots?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Then wash the pots.”
