The purified wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), narrated that when believing women migrated and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he would test them, because of Allah Almighty’s statement: “O you who have believed, when believing women come to you as emigrants, test them.” Until the end of the verse. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that then, among those (migrating) believing women, whoever acknowledged this condition was considered to have passed the test. Thus, when those women would acknowledge it with their tongues, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say to them, “Go, I have taken the pledge from you.” Never! By Allah! The hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never touched the hand of any woman (while taking the pledge). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would take the pledge from them only verbally. By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took from the women only those pledges which Allah had commanded him to take. After taking the pledge, he would say to them, “I have taken the pledge from you.” He would say this only verbally, “I have taken the pledge from you.”
