Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Each of you is a shepherd and each of you will be questioned about his flock. So, the leader of the people is a shepherd and he will be questioned about his flock. Every man is a shepherd over the members of his household and he will be questioned about his flock. A woman is a shepherd over her husband’s house and his children, and she will be questioned about them. A servant is a shepherd over his master’s property and he will be questioned about it. So, know that each of you is a shepherd and each of you will be questioned about his flock (on the Day of Resurrection).

Hasan narrates that Ubaydullah bin Ziyad came to visit Miqdal bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) during the illness in which he passed away. Miqdal bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "I will tell you a hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: When Allah appoints a servant as a ruler over a people and he does not protect them with goodwill, he will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise."
