Hazrat Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) rode on a donkey on which there was a saddle, and underneath it was a velvet sheet made in Fadak. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had seated Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him on the ride. He was going to visit Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) of the Banu Harith bin Khazraj, to inquire about his health. This incident took place before the Battle of Badr. The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by a gathering in which Muslims, idol-worshipping polytheists, and Jews were all present. Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul was also among them. Abdullah bin Rawaha was also present in the gathering. When the dust from the ride reached the gathering, Abdullah bin Ubayy covered his nose with his sheet and said, “Do not scatter dust over us.” Then the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) greeted them with salam and stopped there, dismounted, and invited them towards Allah and recited the Holy Qur’an for them. Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul said, “Sir, I am unable to understand these things. If what you say is true, then do not trouble us by coming to our gatherings. Go to your own house, and tell it to those who come to you.” At this, Ibn Rawaha said, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) should come to our gatherings, for we like it.” Then there was a dispute among the Muslims, polytheists, and Jews over this matter, and it was near that they would have made a move and attacked each other, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept calming them down, and when they became quiet, the Prophet (peace be upon him) mounted his ride and went to Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him, “Sa’d, have you not heard what Abu Hubab said today?” He was referring to Abdullah bin Ubayy, that he said such and such things. Hazrat Sa’d said, “O Messenger of Allah! Forgive him and overlook it. Allah Almighty has granted you the truth which He intended to grant. The people of this town (Madinah Munawwarah), before your arrival, had agreed to crown him and tie the royal turban on his head, but when Allah Almighty ended that plan because of the truth He granted you, he became jealous of the truth, and that is why he did what you saw.” Thus, the Prophet (peace be upon him) forgave him.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that it was suggested to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that it would be better if he visited Abdullah bin Ubayy, the hypocrite. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to him riding on a donkey. The companions were walking with him on foot. The place where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was passing was a barren land. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached him, he (Abdullah) said, "Please stay away, the smell of your donkey has disturbed my mind." Upon this, an Ansari companion said, "By Allah! The donkey of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is more fragrant than you." A man from Abdullah the hypocrite’s tribe became angry at this statement of the companion, and both of them started abusing each other. Then supporters from both sides became agitated, and it escalated to the point of fighting with hands, sticks, and even shoes. Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "We learned that this verse was revealed on this occasion: 'If two groups of Muslims fight each other, make peace between them.'"
