Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made the treaty of Hudaybiyyah (with the Quraysh), the document was written by 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He wrote in it: "From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." The polytheists objected to this, saying: "Do not write 'the Messenger of Allah' with Muhammad. If you were the Messenger of Allah, why would we be fighting you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Erase the words 'the Messenger of Allah'." 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I said, I cannot erase it." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) erased it himself with his own hand. And he made peace with the polytheists on the condition that he would come to Makkah the following year with his companions for three days, and that they would enter with their weapons sheathed. Al-Bara's students asked him: "What is 'jalban al-silah' that is mentioned here?" He replied: "The sheath and what is inside it is called 'jalban'."

Hazrat Abu Wa’il narrated that we were encamped at the place of Siffin. Then Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, “O people! Consider your own opinion to be mistaken. We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at the time of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. If fighting had been required, we would certainly have fought at that time. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came on that occasion (i.e., at Hudaybiyyah) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Are we not upon the truth and are they not upon falsehood?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Why not!’ Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘Will not our slain be in Paradise and their slain in Hell?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Why not!’ Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘Then why should we submit in the matter of our religion? Should we return (to Madinah) without Allah having decided between us and them?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘O son of Khattab! I am the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never ruin me.’ After that, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him the same questions that he had just asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He also replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is indeed Allah’s Messenger, and Allah will never let him be ruined.’ Then Surah Al-Fath was revealed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited it to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) till the end. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘Is this (really) a victory?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Yes! Indeed, this is a victory.’
