Hadith 1165
Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) besieged Ta’if, no harm was done to the enemy. Eventually, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Now, if Allah wills, we shall return.” It was very hard for the Muslims to return unsuccessful. They said, “Alas! Shall we return without victory?” (The narrator once used the word “naqfil” instead of “nadhhab,” meaning, “we shall return and not conquer Ta’if.”) Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Then come out to the battlefield for battle early in the morning.” The companions came early in the morning, but a large number of them were wounded. Then again, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If Allah wills, we shall return tomorrow.” The companions liked this very much. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed at this.
