Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about luqatah (a lost item found on the way). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Examine its pouch and its binding thoroughly. Then announce it for a year. If its owner comes during this period (then give it to him), otherwise, it becomes yours. The questioner asked: And what about a lost goat? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is yours, or your brother’s, or the wolf’s. The questioner asked: And what about a lost camel? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What concern do you have with it? It has its water container with it and its home. It can reach water and eat from the trees until its owner finds it.

Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I found a pouch in which there were one hundred dinars. I took it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said, "Announce it for one year." I announced it for one year and then presented myself (saying the owner has still not been found). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Announce it for another year." I announced it for another year and then presented myself. This time too, he said, "Announce it for another year." I again announced it for a year, and when I presented myself the fourth time, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Keep in mind the amount of money, the string of the pouch, and its appearance. If its owner comes, give it to him; otherwise, spend it on your needs."
