Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) divorced his wife (Amina bint Ghafar) during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while she was in her menstrual period. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter, so he said: Tell him to take his wife back and then keep her in his marriage until her menstruation ends, then her menstruation comes again and ends. Then, if he wishes, he may keep his wife in his marriage, and if he wishes, he may divorce her (but the divorce should be in that period of purity) before having intercourse with her. This is the period of purity in which Allah Almighty has commanded to divorce women.

Yunus bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar about (divorce during menstruation), so he informed that Ibn Umar had divorced his wife while she was in her menstrual period. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that Ibn Umar should take his wife back, and then when the correct time for divorce comes, he may divorce her. (Yunus narrated that he asked Ibn Umar:) I asked, "Was that divorce counted?" He replied, "If a person giving divorce is unable to fulfill the requirements of Shariah or is foolish and ignorant (then will the divorce not take place)?"
