Hadith 863
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Ibrahim (peace be upon him) declared Makkah sacred and prayed for it. I also declare Madinah sacred just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) declared Makkah sacred, and I pray for the blessing of its mudd and sa’ (the two measures for grain) just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) prayed.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Talhah, "Find me a child from among your children who can serve me." So Abu Talhah brought me, seating me behind him on his mount. Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) halted somewhere, I would serve him. I used to hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) frequently recite this supplication: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief, sorrow, incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, the burden of debt, and the overpowering of men." (Sayyiduna Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that) I continued to serve him from that time until we returned from Khaybar, and Lady Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) was also with us. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had chosen her. I saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a curtain with a cloth for her on his mount and then seated her there. Finally, when we reached the place of Sahba, he spread a dining cloth and prepared hais (a mixture of dates, cheese, and ghee, etc.). Then he sent me, and I called the people, and everyone ate from it. This was the wedding feast (walimah) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for Lady Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then he set out, and when Uhud became visible, he said, "This mountain loves us, and we love it." After that, when Madinah came into view, he said, "O Allah, I declare the area between its two mountains a sanctuary just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) declared Makkah a sanctuary. O Allah, bless its inhabitants in their mudd and in their sa’ (measures)."

Asim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that I asked Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) declare Madinah Munawwarah a sacred city?" He replied, "Yes, from such-and-such a place (Ayr) to such-and-such a place (Thur), no tree of this area should be cut. Whoever introduces a new thing within these boundaries, upon him is the curse of Allah, His angels, and all mankind." Asim said that then Musa bin Anas informed me that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) also stated that, "or whoever gives refuge to an innovator in religion."

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon standing on a pulpit made of bricks. He was holding a sword, from which a scroll was hanging. He said: "By Allah, we have no book to be read except the Book of Allah, and nothing else except this scroll." Then he opened it, and in it was written the ages of camels to be given in blood money (diyah), (i.e., that camels of such and such ages should be given in diyah). And in it was also written that the land of Madinah Tayyibah, from the mountain of 'Ayr to the mountain of Thawr, is a sanctuary (Haram). So whoever introduces any new thing (innovation) in it, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will not accept any obligatory or voluntary act of worship from him. And in it was also written that the responsibility (pledge or protection) of the Muslims is one, and even the lowest among the Muslims can grant protection. So whoever breaks the protection given by a Muslim, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will not accept from him any obligatory or voluntary act of worship. And in it was also written that whoever establishes a bond of allegiance (wala’) with someone without the permission of his masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people. Allah will not accept from him any obligatory or voluntary prayer.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say: If I see deer grazing in Madinah, I would never disturb them, because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said that the land of Madinah is a sanctuary between its two rocky fields.
