Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the first circumambulation (i.e., Tawaf al-Qudum) of the Ka'bah, he would walk briskly in three of its circuits and walk normally in four. Then, when he performed Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, he would run in the valley (Batn al-Masil).

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that (in the year of Umratul-Qada, 7 AH) when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Makkah, the polytheists said that Muhammad has come and with him are people whom the fever of Yathrib (Madinah Munawwarah) has weakened. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that in the first three circuits of Tawaf, they should perform Raml (walking briskly to show strength), and between the two Yemeni corners, they should walk as usual. And he did not order that Raml be done in all the circuits, so that it would be easy for them.
