Hazrat Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that, except for the Hums, all other people used to perform Tawaf naked during the days of ignorance. Hums referred to the Quraysh and their descendants. They used to give clothes (for the sake of Allah) to the people—the men of Quraysh would give clothes to other men so that they could wear them and perform Tawaf, and the women of Quraysh would give clothes to other women so that they could wear them and perform Tawaf. Those whom the Quraysh did not give clothes would perform Tawaf of the House of Allah naked. All other people would return from Arafat, but the Quraysh would return from Muzdalifah (which was within the Haram). Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that this verse was revealed about the Quraysh: "Then you (Quraysh) should return from where the other people return," meaning from Arafat (Surah Al-Baqarah 199). She narrated that the Quraysh used to return from Muzdalifah, so they were commanded to return from Arafat.

Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I lost a camel of mine, so I went to Arafat to search for it. It was the day of Arafat. I saw that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was standing in the plain of Arafat. The words escaped my lips, “By Allah! These are the Quraysh, so why are they here?”
