Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said that he had intercourse with his wife during Ramadan. The Prophet asked, "Do you have the ability to free a slave?" He replied, "No." The Prophet then asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Prophet then asked, "Do you have the means to feed sixty needy people?" Again, his answer was in the negative. The narrator stated that a sack was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which contained dates (an ‘araq is a kind of basket). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Take this and give it as charity on your behalf (to the needy)." The man said, "Should I give it to someone poorer than us? There is no household between these two plains more needy than ours." The Prophet said, "Then go and feed it to your own family."

Narrated by Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): A man came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the mosque and said, "I have become deserving of Hell." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, "What happened?" He said, "I had intercourse with my wife during Ramadan." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him, "Then give charity." He said, "I have nothing." Then he sat down, and after that, another man came driving a donkey on which there was some food. (Abdur Rahman, who is among the narrators of the hadith, said: I do not know what that thing was.) It was being brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, "Where is the man who was to be burned in the Fire?" The man replied, "I am present." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Take it and give it as charity." He asked, "Should I give it to someone more needy than myself? There is nothing for my own family to eat." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Then you eat it yourself."
