Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting continuously (without taking suhoor and iftar). Upon this, a man from among the Muslims said, "O Messenger of Allah, but you observe continuous fasting?" He replied, "Who among you is like me? My Lord feeds me at night and gives me drink." When the people still did not refrain from fasting continuously, he fasted continuously with them for two days, then the moon of Eid appeared. He said, "If the moon had not appeared, I would have continued fasting for more days," as if, when they did not refrain from continuous fasting, he said this to punish them.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) observed continuous fasting (i.e., he did not eat at the time of iftar or suhoor and kept the fast going) during the last days of Ramadan. So some of the companions also observed continuous fasting. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, he said: "If the days of this month were to increase, I would continue fasting for so many days that those who are excessive in their desires would give up their desire. I am not like you people. I spend my days in such a way that my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."
