Hadith 598
Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when we were commanded to give charity, we used to carry loads for wages (and would give those wages in charity). Thus, Abu Aqil (may Allah be pleased with him) brought half a sa’ as charity from his wages, and another companion, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), brought more than that. Upon this, the hypocrites said that Allah had no need for the charity of this (i.e., Abu Aqil), and as for the other (Abdur Rahman bin Awf, may Allah be pleased with him), he gave so much charity only to show off. So this verse was revealed: These are the people who taunt the believers who give voluntary charity, and especially those who have nothing except what they earn through their hard labor; they mock them. Allah will mock them (the mockers), and for them is a painful punishment. (At-Tawbah 79)
