Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: It is obligatory for every Muslim to give charity. The companions asked: If someone does not have anything (to give in charity)? He (the Prophet) said: Then he should work with his own hands, benefit himself, and also give charity. The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: If he does not have the strength for that, or he cannot do it? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Then he should help someone in need or in distress. The companions asked: If he cannot do even that? He said: Then he should encourage others towards good, or he said, do good. They asked: And if he cannot do even that? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Then he should refrain from evil, for that too is charity for him.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Charity is due upon every joint of a person, every day upon which the sun rises. If he acts justly between people, that is also a charity. And helping a man with his mount, lifting him onto it, or hoisting his belongings onto it, that is also a charity. And a good word is also a charity. And every step he takes towards prayer is also a charity. And removing something harmful from the road is also a charity.
