Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are three types of people who own horses. For some, they are a source of reward; for some, they are merely a means of covering needs; and for some, they are a burden. The one for whom the horse is a source of reward is the person who keeps it with the intention of striving in the path of Allah. Then, wherever there is abundant pasture, or (he said) in some lush place, he ties its rope long so that it can graze all around. So whatever the horse eats or drinks while tied with its rope in that pasture or lush place, the owner receives good deeds because of it. And if the horse breaks its rope and runs a furlong or two, then even in its dung and the marks of its hooves, there are good deeds for the owner. And if the horse passes by a canal and drinks water from it, even if the owner did not intend to give it water, still he receives good deeds from it. The second person is the one who keeps the horse for pride, showing off, and enmity towards the Muslims; for him, it is a burden. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about donkeys, so he said: Nothing has been revealed to me regarding them except this comprehensive and unique verse: Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
