Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) received the news of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Zaid bin Harithah, Sayyiduna Ja’far, and Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with them) (in the Battle of Mu’tah), he was sitting in such a way that the signs of grief were visible on his face. I was looking through a hole in the door when a man came and mentioned the weeping of the women in the house of Sayyiduna Ja’far (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet said, “Forbid them from weeping.” He went but returned and said, “They are not listening.” The Prophet again said, “Forbid them.” He went a second time but returned and said, “By Allah, they have overpowered us.” (Lady Aisha) became certain that (upon his saying this) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Then throw dust in their mouths.” At this I said, “May you be ruined! Now you will not do what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded, but you have caused him distress.”

Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge from us, he also took this covenant from us that we would not wail (over the dead). But except for five women, no one fulfilled this promise. These women were Umm Sulaym, Umm ‘Ala’, the daughter of Abu Sabrah who was in the house of Mu‘adh, and besides them two women, or (she said) the daughter of Abu Sabrah, the wife of Mu‘adh, and another woman. (may Allah be pleased with her)

Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he recited before us this verse: “That you will not associate anything with Allah” (Al-Mumtahanah: 12), and he forbade us from wailing (that is, loudly crying and lamenting over the dead). Upon this prohibition of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), one woman (Umm ‘Atiyyah herself) withdrew her hand and said, “Such-and-such woman helped me in wailing; I wish to repay her.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not reply to her, so she went away and then returned and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) again.
