Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing and delivering the sermon on Friday when, in the meantime, one of the elder companions from among the earliest Emigrants of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived (that is, Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "What kind of time is this (to come)?" He replied, "I was occupied, and as soon as I returned home, I heard the call to prayer, so I could not do more than perform ablution (wudu) (i.e., I could not perform the ritual bath)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Is it (only) ablution? Whereas you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to command (us) to perform the ritual bath (ghusl)."
