Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that some students of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) (in Syria). Sayyiduna Abu Darda searched for them and found them. Then he asked them, "Who among you can recite according to the recitation of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud?" The students said, "All of us can." Then he asked, "Who among you has preserved his recitation the most?" All of them pointed towards Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him). He inquired, "How have you heard him recite Surah 'Wal-Laili Iza Yaghsha'?" Alqamah said, "He recited 'Wal-dhakari wal-untha' (without 'ma khalaqa')." He said, "I bear witness that I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite it in this way. But these people (i.e., the people of Syria) want me to recite 'wa ma khalaqa al-dhakara wal-untha.' By Allah, I will not follow them."
