Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Recite the Qur’an to me.” I said, “What should I recite to you when the Qur’an has been revealed to you?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I desire to hear it from someone else.” The narrator stated that I recited Surah An-Nisa, and when I reached the verse: ‘How then will it be when We bring from every nation a witness and We bring you as a witness against these people’ (), the Noble Prophet said, “Stop.” (The Messenger of Allah said ‘Kuff’ or ‘Amsik’—the narrator is in doubt.) I saw that tears were flowing from the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (‘Kuff’ and ‘Amsik’ both mean the same, i.e., stop.) In this verse, there is mention of the Day of Judgment when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will be presented as a witness over his Ummah.

Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that we were in Homs when Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited Surah Yusuf. A man said, "It was not revealed in this way." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I recited this Surah before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he praised my recitation." He noticed that the objector's mouth smelled of wine, so he said, "He commits two sins together: making a false statement about the Book of Allah and drinking wine." Then he had the prescribed punishment carried out on him.
