Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the night prayer during travel on his mount by making gestures, regardless of which direction the mount was facing; he would continue to pray by gestures, but he did not perform the obligatory prayers in this manner, and he would perform Witr on his camel.

Anas bin Sirin says that when Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) returned from Syria (after complaining about Hajjaj to the caliph), we met him at Ayn al-Tamr. We saw that he was performing prayer while riding a donkey, and his face was turned to the left of the Qiblah. Upon this, I said, "I have seen you praying with your face turned in a direction other than the Qiblah." He replied, "If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing so, I would not have done it myself."
