Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that one night the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the ‘Isha prayer late. This incident occurred before the spread of Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come out until Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the women and children have gone to sleep. Then the Prophet came out and said: No one in the world waits for this prayer except you.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was occupied with some work one night and delayed greatly. We (while waiting for the prayer) fell asleep in the mosque. Then we woke up, then we slept again, then we woke up again. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out from his house and said: No person in the world, except you, is waiting for this prayer.

Humaid says that it was asked from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have a ring made? He narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the ‘Isha prayer one night at midnight, then turned his blessed face towards us, as if even now I am seeing the shine of the ring of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: Many people have performed the prayer and gone to sleep, but you are still in prayer as long as you are waiting for the prayer.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I stayed at Baqi’ Bathan with those of my companions who had come with me (from Abyssinia) by boat, at that time the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was residing in Madinah. Among us, someone would be appointed daily by turn to attend the ‘Isha prayer in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By chance, once I and one of my companions went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was engaged in some work (he and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, were discussing some public matter), due to which the prayer was delayed and about half the night had passed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and led the prayer. When the prayer was completed, he said to those present: Remain seated in your places with dignity and listen to a glad tiding. There is no one in the world at this time, except you, who is performing prayer, or he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No (community) other than you has performed prayer at this time. Sayyiduna Abu Musa said: So we returned very happy after hearing this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the ‘Isha prayer one night, as a result of which people (remained in the mosque and) fell asleep, then woke up, then fell asleep again, then woke up again. Finally, Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and called out, “Prayer!” After that, the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out from his house. That scene is before my eyes: drops of water were dripping from the blessed head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he had his hand placed on his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If it were not difficult for my ummah, I would have commanded them to perform the ‘Isha prayer at this time.” (Ibn Jurayj narrates this hadith from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas through ‘Ata and says:) I further investigated from ‘Ata about the manner in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on his head, and how Ibn Abbas informed him about this. Upon this, ‘Ata slightly spread the fingers of his hand and placed them on one side of his head, then joined them and moved them over his head in such a way that his thumb touched the edge of the ear that is close to the face and reached the beard. He did not do it lazily nor hastily, but did it in this manner, and said that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “If it were not difficult for my ummah, I would have commanded them to perform this prayer at this time.”
