Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that on the occasion of the Battle of Ahzab (Trench), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked against the polytheists, saying: "O Allah, fill their houses and graves with fire. They did not let us perform the middle prayer (Asr prayer) until the sun had set."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came after the sun had set during the Battle of the Trench, and he was cursing the disbelievers of Quraysh. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, the sun has set and I was not able to perform the Asr prayer." Upon this, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have not performed it either." Then we went to the valley of Bathan, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution there, and we also performed ablution. At that time, the sun had already set. First, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the Asr prayer, and after that, he performed the Maghrib prayer.
