Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would go out (from Madinah) on the day of Eid, he would order that a small spear (lance) be fixed in the ground. When it was placed in front of him, he would face towards it and perform the prayer, and the people would stand behind him. He used to do the same while traveling. (Because of this) the caliphs of the Muslims made it a habit to keep a spear with them.

Sayyiduna Abu Juhaifah Wahb bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a red leather tent, and I also saw that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was helping the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution, and every person was trying to get ahead of the other to obtain some of the water from his ablution. If anyone managed to get even a little water, he would rub it on himself, and if someone could not get any water, he would try to obtain some moisture from his companion’s hand. Then I saw Bilal pick up a spear, which had an iron tip at the bottom, and he fixed it (as a sutrah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out (from the tent) wearing a red garment, with his lower garment raised up to his shins, and he faced the spear and led the people in two rak‘ahs of prayer. I saw that men and animals were passing beyond the spear.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once I set out riding a donkey, and at that time I was close to reaching puberty. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer at Mina, and there was no wall (barrier) in front of him. I passed in front of some of the rows and left the donkey to graze. It began to graze, and I joined the row for prayer (for the prayer). Yet, no one objected to me for this.
