The purified wife of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a journey (the expedition of Banu Al-Mustaliq). When we reached the place of Bayda or Dhat al-Jaysh, my necklace was lost. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stayed there to look for it, and the people also stayed with him. But there was no water nearby. The people came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: What has Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) done that she has made the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and all the people stop, and there is no water anywhere nearby, nor do the people have any with them? Then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was resting his blessed head on my knee and was sleeping. He (Abu Bakr) said: You have held up the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and all the people, while there is no water anywhere nearby, nor do the people have any. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: My respected father (may Allah be pleased with him) was very angry with me, and he said to me whatever Allah willed, and he poked me in my side with his hand. The blessed head of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was on my thigh, so I could not move. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) woke up in the morning, there was still no sign of water. So Allah the Exalted revealed the verse of tayammum, and the people performed tayammum. Upon this, Usayd ibn Hudayr said: O family of Abu Bakr, this is not your first blessing. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Then we moved the camel on which I was riding, and the necklace was found underneath it.

Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I was present in the company of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Musa said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "If a person is in need of ghusl and does not find water for a whole month, should he not perform tayammum and pray?" Shaqiq says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud replied: "He should not perform tayammum, even if he does not find water for a month (and should suspend the prayer)." Upon this, Abu Musa said: "Then what is the meaning of this verse in Surah Al-Ma'idah: 'If you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth'?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If people are given this permission, then soon it will happen that whenever they find the water cold, they will perform tayammum with earth." The narrator states: "I said, so you dislike tayammum for a person in the state of janabah?" He said: "Yes." Then Sayyiduna Abu Musa said: "Do you not know the statement of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) before Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me for a task, and during the journey I needed to perform ghusl but did not find water, so I rolled in the earth like an animal. Then I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this,' and he struck his hands on the earth once, then shook them off, then wiped the back of his right hand with his left or wiped his left hand with his right, then wiped his face with both hands.'" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Do you not see that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not satisfied with Ammar's statement?"

A man came to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I am in need of ghusl and have not found water (so what should I do now)?" Upon this, Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir said to Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), "Do you not remember when you and I were on a journey and both of us became junub? You did not pray, but I rolled on the ground and performed the prayer. Then I mentioned this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hands on the earth, blew on them, and then wiped his face and palms with both hands."

The freed slave of Sayyiduna Abbas, Umair bin Abdullah, said that I and Abdullah bin Yasar, the freed slave of Hazrat Maymunah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), came to Abu Juhaim bin Harithah Sammah Al-Ansari (a companion). So Abu Juhaim narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was coming from the direction of Bi’r Jamal when a man met him on the way and greeted him with salam (that is, Abu Juhaim himself). But the Prophet did not reply. Then he came near a wall and wiped his face and hands, and then replied to his salam.
