Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "What benefit did you give to your uncle (Abu Talib), as he used to support you and get angry for your sake?" He replied, "(Because of this) he is only in the shallowest part of Hell up to his ankles. If I had not interceded for him, he would have been in the lowest depth of Hell."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while his uncle was being mentioned in his gathering. The Prophet said: "Perhaps on the Day of Resurrection my intercession will benefit him, and he will be placed in Hell only up to his ankles, from which his brain will boil."
