Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: "And warn your nearest relatives of Allah's punishment." (Ash-Shu'ara 214), the Prophet said: "O people of Quraysh (or he said something similar), save your own souls (by doing righteous deeds). I cannot avail you anything before Allah (that is, I cannot do anything against His will). O sons of Abd Manaf, I cannot avail you anything before Allah. O Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) son of Abdul Muttalib, I cannot avail you anything before Allah. O Safiyyah, my paternal aunt, I cannot avail you anything before Allah. O Fatimah, my daughter, ask me for whatever you want of my wealth, but I cannot avail you anything before Allah."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that when this verse was revealed: "And warn your closest relatives" and "Warn your tribe of near kindred who are sincere," the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed the hill of Safa and called out, "O Sabahah!" The Quraysh said, "Who is this?" Then they all gathered there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, "What do you think, if I were to tell you that an army is coming from behind this mountain, would you not believe me?" They said, "We have never experienced any lie from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then I warn you of a severe punishment that is coming upon you." Upon hearing this, Abu Lahab said, "May you perish! Did you gather us for this?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left from there, and Surah Lahab was revealed: "May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he."
