Hadith 16
Sayyiduna Musayyib bin Hazn (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when Abu Talib’s time of death approached, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to him and found Abu Jahl bin Hisham and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah bin Mughirah present with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Talib, “O uncle, say a word—La ilaha illallah (there is no deity except Allah)—so that I may testify for you with it before Allah, the Exalted.” Upon this, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said, “O Abu Talib, will you turn away from the religion of your father, Abdul Muttalib?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to present the word of Islam to him, and Abu Jahl and Ibn Abi Umayyah kept repeating their statement. Finally, the last thing Abu Talib said was that he was on the religion of Abdul Muttalib, and he refused to say La ilaha illallah. Even then, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I will continue to seek forgiveness for you until I am forbidden to do so.” Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed the verse: “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the companions of Hell.” (At-Tawbah 113)
