Sayyiduna Zuhair bin Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade us from an act in which (apparently) there was personal benefit for us. (The narrator, Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij, said:) Upon this, I said that whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said is the truth. Zuhair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called me and asked, “How do you people manage your fields?” I said, “We give our fields (for cultivation) on the condition of the land near the canal, and similarly, for a few wasqs of dates and barley.” Upon hearing this, he said, “Do not do so; either cultivate it yourself or have others cultivate it, otherwise just leave it uncultivated.” Sayyiduna Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I said, “I have heard and accepted your command.”
