Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that when I got married, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked me, "Whom did you marry?" I replied, "A widow." He said, "Why did you not marry a virgin, so that you could play with her?" Muharib (one of the narrators in the chain) said: Then I related this statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to Amr bin Dinar, so he said: I heard Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me, "Why did you not marry a virgin woman, so that you could play with her and she could play with you?"

Brief Explanation
Marriage to a widow is permissible, although marrying a virgin is better. In India, previously, even among Muslims, widows were considered objectionable, but Sayyid Ahmad Shaheed and Shah Isma'il Shaheed rahimahullah waged a struggle against this evil custom and practically abolished it. (Raaz) Polygamy is considered undesirable in our Hindu-influenced society, but it has countless benefits. Many modest and chaste women thus come under the care of a man and begin to lead a clean and pure life. We are Muslims only in name, not in action. That is why we also dislike this virtuous practice, which is entirely in accordance with the demands of nature. Yes, in this era, the prevalence of this practice is somewhat greater among the scholars of the Ummah compared to other groups.
