Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d narrated that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I have come to offer myself to you (for marriage).” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at her and then lowered his gaze and bowed his head. When the woman saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had not made any decision regarding her, she sat down. Then one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her, then marry her to me.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Do you have anything (to give as mahr)?” He replied, “No, O Messenger of Allah! By Allah!” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Go to your house and see, perhaps you may find something.” He went and came back and said, “No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I did not find anything there.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Then look, even an iron ring will do.” He went and came back and said, “No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I did not even find an iron ring, but I have this lower garment (izaar).” Sayyiduna Sahl says that he did not even have a sheet (to cover himself). The companion said, “Give her half of it.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “What will she do with your lower garment? If you wear it, it will not be suitable for her, and if she wears it, it will not be suitable for you.” Then that companion sat down. After sitting for a long time, he got up. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him leaving and called him back. When he came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “How much of the Qur’an do you know by heart?” He replied, “Such and such surahs I know by heart,” and he counted their names. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Can you recite them by heart?” He replied, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Go, I have married her to you in exchange for the portion of the Qur’an you know by heart.”
