Brief Explanation
Marriage for a fixed period is called mut‘ah because its very purpose was the attainment of specific benefits and objectives. The seeking of children, etc., was not intended. In the beginning of Islam, the form of mut‘ah marriage was permissible for one in necessity; then, on the day of Khaybar, it was prohibited; then, at the conquest of Makkah, permission was granted again; then, on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada‘), it was declared prohibited forever.
