Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us two hadiths. I have witnessed the fulfillment of one, and I am awaiting the other. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that trust (amanah) descends into the depths of people’s hearts, then it is strengthened by the Qur’an and then by the hadith. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us about its removal: a man will sleep a sleep, and (in that sleep) trust will be taken away from his heart, and a faint mark of dishonesty will remain. Then he will sleep another sleep, and now its mark will become like a blister, as if you roll a spark on your foot and a blister appears on the surface, which looks swollen but inside there is nothing. Then the situation will become such that people will engage in buying and selling in the morning, and there will not be a trustworthy person among them. It will be said, “There is a trustworthy person in such-and-such tribe.” About a person it will be said, “How intelligent he is, how resolute he is, and how brave he is,” even though there will not be even a mustard seed’s worth of faith (trust) in his heart. (Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) I have also seen a time when I did not care from whom I bought or sold; if he was a Muslim, Islam would prevent him (from dishonesty), and if he was a Christian, his helper would prevent him. But now, I do not buy or sell except with so-and-so and so-and-so.
