Hadith 846

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "As long as I leave you alone, you should also leave me alone (and do not ask unnecessary questions), because the nations before you were destroyed due to their (unnecessary) questions and their disagreements with their prophets. So when I forbid you from something, then avoid it, and when I command you to do something, then do it to the best of your ability."

Brief Explanation
That is, as long as I do not myself prohibit you from something or command you to do something, do not ask me questions; otherwise, seeking such details will lead to the same situation that befell Bani Isra'il: when they were commanded to slaughter a cow, they imposed hardship upon themselves, so Allah Ta'ala also made it hard for them.
