Sulaiman Al-A’mash (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that I heard Hajjaj on the pulpit mentioning the names of the surahs in this way: “The surah in which the cow (Baqarah) is mentioned, the surah in which the family of Imran is mentioned, the surah in which women (Nisa) are mentioned.” Al-A’mash said: I mentioned this to Ibrahim Al-Nakha’i (may Allah have mercy on him), so he said: ‘Abdur Rahman bin Yazid narrated to me that when Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) stoned Jamrat al-‘Aqabah, he was with them. At that time, he descended into the valley, and when he was level with the tree (which was there at that time), he stood below it and in front of it, and stoned with seven pebbles, saying “Allahu Akbar” with each pebble. Then he said: “By Him besides whom there is no deity, here stood the one upon whom Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed (peace and blessings be upon him).”
