Hadith 799

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Black Stone and kissed it and said: I know well that you are only a stone; you can neither harm anyone nor benefit anyone. If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kissing you, I would never have kissed you.

Brief Explanation
From this narration, it is clear that kissing the threshold of graves, kissing the ground of graves, or kissing the grave itself—all these actions are impermissible. These practices have been invented by the ignorant and are acts of shirk (associating partners with Allah). This is because those whose graves are kissed are considered by people to be owners of benefit and harm, and people call upon them and seek their needs from them. Therefore, what doubt can there be in this being shirk? Even if someone kisses (the grave) purely out of love, this too is wrong and an innovation (bid‘ah). (Raaz) (In fact, it is tantamount to opening the doors to shirk.)
