Hadith 772

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), when he intended to perform Hajj in the year when he came to fight against Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), it was said to him that there was going to be fighting among the Muslims and there was also a danger that you might be prevented from performing Hajj. He replied, "For you, the life of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is the best example (Ahzab 21). Even at such a time, I will do only what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did." He said, "I make you witnesses that I have made Umrah obligatory upon myself." Then he set out, and when he reached the plain of Bida’, he said, "Hajj and Umrah are of the same kind. I make you witnesses that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with my Umrah." He also took a sacrificial animal with him, which he had bought from the place of Qudayd, and did nothing else. Before the tenth day, he neither offered the sacrifice nor made anything lawful for himself from which he had refrained due to Ihram, nor did he shave his head or trim his hair. On the tenth day, he offered the sacrifice and shaved his head. He believed that with one Tawaf, he had performed the Tawaf for both Hajj and Umrah. Ibn Umar said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had done the same.
