Hadith 743

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the place of Qahah. Some of us were in the state of ihram and some were not. I saw that my companions were showing something to each other. When I looked up, there was a wild donkey (onager) in front of us. Their intention was that their whip had fallen (and they asked their companions to pick it up), but the companions said, "We cannot help you at all because we are in the state of ihram." So I picked it up myself. After that, I approached the wild donkey from behind a mound and hunted it. Then I brought it to my companions. Some said that we should eat it, but others said that we should not eat it. Then I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was ahead of us. I asked you about the matter, and you said, "Eat it, it is lawful."

Brief Explanation
Apparently, in this hadith it seems that some of the wording is incomplete, but the words are exactly as they are here. Abu ‘Awanah narrated this hadith from Abu Dawud al-Harrani, and he from ‘Ali ibn al-Madini, with these words: “Suddenly, I saw a wild donkey (zebra), so I mounted my horse and picked up a spear and a whip. The whip fell from me, so I said, ‘Hand it to me.’” Whereas in Sahih al-Bukhari, in another place (Book of Gifts, Chapter: Whoever Asked His Companions for Something), it is stated: “I forgot the whip and the spear, so I said to my companions, ‘Hand me the whip and the spear.’” And in Sahih Muslim, at this place, the wording is: “I put the saddle on my horse and took my spear, then mounted, and my whip fell from me, so I said to my companions, who were in the state of ihram, ‘Hand me the whip.’” By combining all the narrations, it becomes clear that when this Companion first mounted the horse, he forgot his whip and spear due to haste; then, when he picked up these items and mounted, the whip fell down.
