Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encountered the polytheists (with his companions in the battle of Uhud or Khaybar) and fighting broke out. Then, when you (after finishing the fighting that day) returned to your camp and the polytheists to theirs, there was a man with your army whose state in fighting was such that whenever he saw any man from the polytheists anywhere, he would chase him and kill him with his sword. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said about him that today, as zealously as so-and-so fought, none among us could fight like that. Upon this, you said, “But that man is from the people of Hellfire.” One of the Muslims (in his heart) said, “Alright, I will follow him (to see why the Prophet, peace be upon him, called him from the people of Hellfire).” He narrated that he stayed with him (present in the fighting the next day). Whenever he stood, this man would also stand, and when he walked fast, he would also walk fast with him. He narrated that eventually, that man was wounded, and the wound was very deep, so he wished for death to come quickly. He placed the edge of his sword on the ground, turned its blade towards his chest, and fell upon the sword, killing himself. Now that companion came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “I bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah.” You asked, “What happened?” He narrated, “That same man about whom you said he is from the people of Hellfire—your statement was very hard on the companions (may Allah be pleased with them). I said to them, ‘On behalf of all of you, I will investigate about him.’ So I followed him. After that, the man was severely wounded and wished for death to come quickly, so he placed the edge of his sword on the ground, turned its blade towards his chest, and fell upon it, killing himself.” At that time, you said, “A man may do the deeds of the people of Paradise as it appears to people, but he is from the people of Hellfire; and a man may do the deeds of the people of Hellfire as it appears to people, but he is from the people of Paradise.”
