Hadith 696

Sayyidah Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awwidh (may Allah be pleased with her) said that on the morning of ‘Ashura, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to the neighborhoods of the Ansar that whoever among them had eaten or drunk in the morning should complete the rest of the day (like a fasting person), and whoever had not eaten or drunk should observe the fast. Rubayyi’ said: After that (after the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory), we would still fast on that day and also make our children fast. We would give them a toy made of wool to keep them occupied, and when any of them cried for food, we would give them that toy until it was time to break the fast.

Brief Explanation
The narrator of the hadith is Sayyidah al-Rubayyi‘ bint Mu‘awwidh ibn ‘Afra’ al-Ansariyyah radi Allahu anha. She belonged to the Banu Najjar tribe. She was a woman of great status and honor. She also pledged allegiance (bay‘ah) under the tree during the Bay‘at al-Ridwan. She states: We used to go on military expeditions (ghazwah) with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and we would treat the wounded and tend to them, and transport the wounded and martyrs towards Madinah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would often visit her house, perform ablution (wudu), pray, and eat there. Her father, Mu‘awwidh, was among the people of Badr and held a high rank among the Companions. He participated in the Battle of Badr and killed Abu Jahl. Sayyidah al-Rubayyi‘ passed away after the year 70 Hijri, during the caliphate of ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan.
