Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that during the Battle of Hunayn, when the fighting began with the tribe of Hawazin, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had an army of ten thousand with him. The people of Quraysh who had been set free by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after the conquest of Makkah were also with him. Then all of them turned their backs (and fled). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called out, "O Ansar!" They replied, "We are present, O Messenger of Allah, we are ready to obey your every command, we are before you." Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his ride and said, "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger." Then the polytheists were defeated. Those people whom the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had set free after the conquest of Makkah and the Muhajirun were given (spoils) by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but the Ansar were not given anything. At this, the Ansar expressed their grief, so he called them and gathered them in a tent. Then he said, "Are you not pleased that other people take sheep and camels with them, and you take the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with you?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If people walk in a valley or a mountain pass, and the Ansar walk in another valley or mountain pass, I would prefer to walk in the valley of the Ansar."
