Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave some wealth to a few people while I was also sitting there. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left out a person who was sitting among them and did not give him anything, even though, among those people, he was the one I liked the most. Finally, I went close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and quietly said, “You did not give anything to so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “(A believer) or a Muslim?” He (Sa’d) narrated that I remained silent for a while, but what I knew about him compelled me, so I said, “O Messenger of Allah, why are you displeased with so-and-so? By Allah, I consider him a believer.” He said, “(A believer) or a Muslim?” This happened three times. Then he said, “I give to one person (and leave out another), but I fear that he might be dragged on his face and thrown into the Fire.”
