Hadith 625

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear most for you regarding this: when Allah will bring forth the blessings of the earth for you." It was asked, "What are the blessings of the earth?" He replied, "The glitter and glamour of the world." Upon this, a companion asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "Can evil be produced from good?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent at this, and we thought perhaps revelation was being sent down to him. After that, he began to wipe his forehead and asked, "Where is the questioner?" The questioner said, "Present." Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the solution to this question became clear to us, we praised that person. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Only good is produced from good. But this wealth is lush and sweet (like green grass), and whatever grows in the spring season destroys or nearly destroys those animals who eat it greedily, except for the animal that eats to its fill; when it has eaten and its sides are full, it turns its face towards the sun, chews the cud, then urinates and defecates, and then returns to eat again. And this wealth is also very sweet. Whoever acquires it rightfully and spends it rightfully, then it is the best means. And whoever acquires it unlawfully is like the person who keeps eating but is never satisfied."

Brief Explanation
Imam Nawawi, in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, states: The meaning of this hadith is that what you acquire of the wealth and splendor of this world is not goodness and virtue, but rather a trial (fitnah). The reality is that goodness is related to virtue, but the wealth of this world and its splendor are not virtue, because they cast a person into trial and make him heedless of and disinterested in the Hereafter, teaching him to love the world. Then, as an example, the aforementioned hadith is mentioned. Its meaning is that the spring crops, their greenery and fodder, due to excessive consumption, cause indigestion and thus destroy (the animal) or bring it close to death. However, when only a small amount is taken as needed, it does not cause harm. In the same way, human souls consider the seeking of such wealth to be good and desirable and are inclined towards it, so some people acquire it in abundance, but, not spending it in its rightful places, they become absorbed in it, and thus this wealth destroys them or brings them close to destruction. But some people acquire only a small amount of worldly wealth, and if they do acquire more, they spend it in its rightful places, so this wealth does not harm them. (Murattab rahimahullah)
