Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If the husband is present at home, no woman should observe (optional) fasting without his permission.

Brief Explanation
A voluntary fast is a supererogatory (nafl) act of worship, whereas obedience to the husband is obligatory (fard) for a woman. Therefore, it is necessary to fulfill the obligatory duty before engaging in a supererogatory act of worship. If the husband desires intimacy with his wife during the day, the woman must break her voluntary fast.
