Hadith 579

Sayyiduna Ahnaf bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I was sitting in a gathering of the Quraysh when suddenly a man came in a rough, coarse garment and in a shabby condition. He stood up, greeted with salam, and said: "Glad tidings to the hoarders of wealth of that stone which will be heated in the fire of Hell and placed on their nipples until it pierces through to the shoulder, and when placed on the thin bone of the shoulder, it will pierce through to the chest. In this way, the stone will keep rolling." After saying this, that person left and sat down leaning against a pillar. I also went with him and sat near him. Until then, I did not know who this person was. I said to him, "I think the people did not like your words." He replied, "They are all foolish. My beloved friend told me..." (I asked, "Who is your beloved friend?" He replied, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.") "O Abu Dharr, do you see Mount Uhud?" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: At that time, I looked up towards the sun to see how much of the day was left, because I thought from your words that you might send me for some task. I replied, "Yes, I have seen Mount Uhud." He said, "If I had gold equal to Mount Uhud, I would not like to keep more than three dinars of it, and I would give all the rest (in the way of Allah)." (Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, further said:) "These people know nothing; they are only concerned with accumulating the world. Never! By Allah, I will neither ask them for their worldly possessions nor inquire from them about any religious matter until I meet Allah, the Exalted."
