Hadith 472

Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that some students of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) (in Syria). Sayyiduna Abu Darda searched for them and found them. Then he asked them, "Who among you can recite according to the recitation of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud?" The students said, "All of us can." Then he asked, "Who among you has preserved his recitation the most?" All of them pointed towards Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him). He inquired, "How have you heard him recite Surah 'Wal-Laili Iza Yaghsha'?" Alqamah said, "He recited 'Wal-dhakari wal-untha' (without 'ma khalaqa')." He said, "I bear witness that I also heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite it in this way. But these people (i.e., the people of Syria) want me to recite 'wa ma khalaqa al-dhakara wal-untha.' By Allah, I will not follow them."

Brief Explanation
The scholars have said that among the matters which remained hidden from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu was this particular recitation (qira’ah) as well. He was not informed of the other recitation, that is, the recitation of "wa ma khalaqa al-dhakara wa al-untha," which was the final and mutawatir (mass-transmitted) recitation. And for this reason, it was established in the Uthmani codex (mushaf). (Wahidi)

Hadith narrator: Sayyiduna Uwaymir ibn Amir radi Allahu anhu is well-known and famous by his kunyah, Abu Darda. He accepted Islam on the day of Badr and participated in the Battle of Uhud. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded him to drive away those who were on the mountain, so he alone drove them away. Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu states that until the passing of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, only four individuals had compiled the Qur’an: Abu Darda, Mu’adh, Zayd ibn Thabit, and Abu Zayd. He is the narrator of 89 ahadith. Ibn Sa’d has stated that he passed away in Damascus in the year 32 Hijri.
