Hadith 426

Hazrat Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrated that I asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), "How many rak'ahs did the Prophet (peace be upon him) pray at night in Ramadan?" She replied, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not pray more than eleven rak'ahs at night, whether it was the month of Ramadan or any other month. First, he would pray four rak'ahs—do not ask about their beauty and length—then he would pray another four rak'ahs—do not ask about their beauty and length—then he would pray three rak'ahs." Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you sleep before praying Witr?'" He replied, "O Aisha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep."

Brief Explanation
These very eleven rak‘ahs have been designated as Tarawih. And from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, according to authentic narrations, only these eleven rak‘ahs are established in both Ramadan and outside of Ramadan. In the blessed month of Ramadan, this prayer became known by the name of Tarawih, and outside of Ramadan, it was called Tahajjud. (Raaz)
