Hadith 345

The noble wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite this supplication in prayer: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sins and from debt." Someone (i.e., Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyidah Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that you seek refuge from debt very frequently. Upon this, he replied that when a person becomes indebted, he tells lies and breaks promises.

Brief Explanation
By "the trials of life" is meant all the tribulations and tests that a person faces throughout his life. For example: worldly trials, desires (shahawat), and mistakes committed due to ignorance. And by "the trials of death" is meant the tribulations and tests that come at the time of one's end, through which a person becomes sinful. Refuge is sought from such a debt that a person takes unlawfully, i.e., without necessity, and then becomes unable to repay it. As for taking a loan out of necessity, for which one is capable of repayment, seeking refuge from that is not intended. The first part of the supplication pertains to the right of Allah Ta'ala, and the second to the rights of the servants. (Murattib rahimahullah)
