Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once in Makkah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Surah An-Najm and performed a prostration. All those who were with him (Muslims and disbelievers) also prostrated along with him. However, an old man (Umayyah bin Khalaf) picked up some pebbles or soil in his hand and brought it up to his forehead and said, "This is sufficient for me." I saw that later that old man remained a disbeliever and was killed.

Brief Explanation
Shah Waliullah sahib rahimahullah has written that when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited Surah An-Najm, the polytheists became so enchanted and overwhelmed that when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed prostration (sajdah) at the verse of prostration, they too, along with the Muslims, went into prostration. In this regard, this interpretation is the most appropriate and clear. (Raaz)
